Culture and Criticism II (P01056)

The four units taught in the spring term focus on a range of themes, theories and trends which have become essential for cultural studies. These include:

a) the relevance of psychoanalytic theory for the understanding of cultural manifestations;

b)explorations into modernism, postmodernism and avant-garde;

c) theories of postcolonialism, and

d) media theories from Marshall McLuhan to the present.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Enabling the students to pursue knowledge and understanding in particular areas of their own interest. Students will be encouraged to use both the university library and the databases, and become acquainted with the resources of the National Library of Scotland.

Assessment Information

One course work essay of 3,000 words.
One two-hour writted examination at the end of the second semester.
