Information Mapping (P01134)? Credit Points : 15 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-edu According to constructivist theory, learning requires the active construction of knowledge structures (or mental models) by engaging with information in suitable contexts. One form of engagement is by building information maps. There are many varieties, including concept maps, argument maps and mind maps, each with a range of useful applications and each of which can be potentially enhanced by computer support. The techniques involved are fairly easy to learn and extremely versatile. This module will explore ways in which information mapping can be effective in developing subject matter understanding as well as more generic skills in critical thinking. Contexts and examples will be drawn mainly from Primary and Secondary school curriculum areas. An explicit aim is to apply the theory to practical classroom contexts. Entry Requirementsnone Subject AreasHome subject areaEducation, (The Moray House School of Education, Schedule C) Delivery Information? Normal year taken : Postgraduate ? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4) ? Contact Teaching Time : 3 hour(s) per week for 8 weeks ? Additional Class Information : evenings and weekends Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing this module course members should be able to:
(1) describe a variety of Information Mapping techniques; (2) operate computer software that supports such techniques; (3) explain how information maps can support forms of assessment, including through the use of intelligent technology; (4) develop applications of Information Mapping that can enhance teaching and learning within relevant classroom contexts; (5) discuss selected research literature in the field of Information Mapping; (5) offer critical advice to colleagues on the appropriate application of relevant technology. Assessment Information
Course members will demonstrate their ability to use, apply and evaluate selected theories and techniques encountered in the module. Each participant will undertake an assignment equivalent to 4000-5000 words to include:
(1) developing a classroom application of Information Mapping; (LO 1, LO 2, LO3, LO4) (2) writing a report of 3000-4000 words which critically analyses the development and demonstrates knowledge of appropriate research literature; (LO 3, LO 4, LO5) (3) preparing a set of slides or other presentation materials suitable for communicating the main aspects of the development to professional colleagues. (LO 6). Contact and Further InformationThe Course Secretary should be the first point of contact for all enquiries.
