Global Strategy and Management (P01138)

The course examines issues and problems associated with the development and implementation of strategy in multinational corporations, with a particular emphasis on issues faced by multinational firms originating from emerging economies and those operating in emerging economies. It aims to provide students with theoretical and methodological tools for understanding these topics and expose them to current trends and major debates in international business.

Topics covered include: global, industry and national environments of the multinational company; the process of firms' internationalisation; types of international strategies; internationalisation of functional strategies; multinationals' organisational structures and processes; knowledge management across borders; strategic management issues in operating in foreign markets and in different forms of international partnering; managing strategic re-direction in complex firms; global corporate citizenship. A running theme will be to examine those issues to MNCs from emerging markets and MNCs operating in emerging markets.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will:

- Gain a knowledge of key concepts and frameworks for examining international management issues
- Be aware of current trends and issues in strategic aspects of multinational management with particular reference to firms originating from and operating in emerging economies
- Be knowledgeable of current academic debates on topical international matters
- Understand the practical implications of the issues
- Learn to work individually and in groups
- Develop their communiation and presentation skills of complex issues and problems
