English grammar: a cognitive account (P01202)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-EGCA-EL Two of the three lectures each week will provide a theory-neutral account, based mainly on the "Cambridge Grammar of the English Language", of nine major topics in the grammar of English. The third lecture will explain how Cognitive Grammar would account for the patterns observed. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
(a) greater understanding of how Modern English grammar works
(b) preparation for more advanced work involving syntactic theories (c) basic grounding in aspects of Cognitive Grammar Assessment Information
Students will be assessed by means of one extended piece of written work of c.4000 words.
