Lexical Semantics (P01203)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-LS-EL In general terms, the course deals with the lexical semantics of English verbs. It is organised into three sections. The first section is concerned with phenomena which involve scope - negation, mood, and tense. The second looks at aspect, and how it interacts with the lexical meanings of particular classes of verbs. The third section is concerned with semantic roles and grammar, as well as semantic roles in word-formation. The course ends with a look at grammatical evidence for polysemy and whether this constitutes evidence, in turn, for prototypes in lexical semantics. Entry Requirements? Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To give students the knowledge and analytical skills in semantic theory which will enable them to analyse the structures of English that present challenges to the analysis of meaning. The course is intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills in semantics appropriate to an Honours graduate in English language. Students should be able to progress to more specialised study in semantics from this course; in addition, they should be equipped to explore semantic interfaces with syntax and morphology in independent work. The course is therefore also designed to motivate and equip students to undertake more advanced work in lexcial semantics with respect to the structures of English.
