Linguistic Fieldwork and Language Description (P01222)

The course is assessed as follows: participation in elicitation sessions counts for 20%; individual project 1 - on the sound system - counts for 40%, and so does individual project 2 - on the morphosyntax. The two projects present descriptive analyses of respectively the sound system and the morphosyntax of Dinka, both exclusively on the basis of the data collected in the elicitation sessions. They are each at least 2500 words long in the case of Honors students, and 3000 in the case of MSc students. The first project is due on 19 of February; the second on 23 of March. Please take into account the general guidelines relating to project papers of Linguistics & English Language.

Runs in alternating years.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The general goal of this course is to prepare the participants for linguistic fieldwork. To that end, the course aims (1) to familiarize the participants with the practice of controlled elicitation and other fieldwork data collection techniques, and (2) to prepare them to independently collect and analyze previously unavailable linguistic data.
