Computing for Historical and Classical Students (P01325)

This entry level course is for postgraduate students in History, Classics, Economic and Social History, Scottish History and for all social science and arts postgraduates with historical interests. It provides an introduction to some of the computer skills which a graduate historian may wish to use during the course of research, analysis and writing. Each unit consists of instruction in the social science microlab followed by practical examples.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course seeks to develop:
- An awareness of the possibilities which computer based methodologies offer to those engaged in historical research.
- An introductory knowledge of basic computing skills appropriate to historical research, notably spread sheet skills, elementary calculation, information analysis and nominal record linkage through the use of look up
tables.
- An awareness of the intellectual problems raised by computer use for historians.
- An awareness of the relationship between the information structures in documents and the data structures required by major generic types of computer application, especially as regards structured and semi structured nominal records.
- The experience of undertaking practical examples and exercises.

Assessment Information

One 2500 word essay, or as specified by the programme.
