Visual Culture II (P01328)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LLC-P-P01328 The course investigates the notion of the East - loaded geopolitical, ideological, aesthetic, and highly symbolic concept - in the context of the eastern edges, margins and centres of Europe. The course is organized around a number of historical tropes which underpin the conflicted contemporary identities of the East of Europe: the Russian Empire, the Bolshevik Revolution, the WWII, Communism, and Post-Communism. By way of exploring the spaces and images, urban sites and filmic representations, the course focuses on the fluid borders of the East (linguistic, national, idealogical, material and imaginary), its shifting centres (Moscow, St Petersburg, Vienna, Paris and Berlin), and its complex identities and allegiances (ethnic, linguistic, aesthetic, and religious).
