Political Theatre in the Weimar Republic (Dr P. Davies and Dr L. Bradley) considers the range of ways in which writers used the theatre to intervene in the political life of the crisis-ridden Weimar Republic. The course looks at work by Brecht, Toller, Fleißer, Ywan Goll, Ilse Langner, and Else Lasker-Schüler, among others.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

We will explore how writers attempted to reinvent the theatre in the service of their ideas, experimenting with forms such as the Expressionist Stationendrama, agitprop, the Volksstück or the passion play in ways that have had a lasting influence on theatre practice in Germany and beyond.
