Spanish theatre of the Golden Age was the most prolific and popular form of mass entertainment. It shaped the theatrical traditions of both England and France, and had a fundamental impact on Romanticism, particularly in Germany.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Via the study of texts by Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina and Calderón de la Barca we will consider the social and ideological factors which shaped Golden Age plays, the performance and acting traditions which dramatists and performers worked with and developed, and the themes they obsessively explored. The aim is to introduce students to a theatrical tradition which in its range, power and impact is second to none
