Reflexivity in Qualitative Research (P01353)

Short description of course

Building on a prior foundation in qualitative methods in social science, this course aims to provide students with an in-depth, applied understanding of the principles and practices of reflexivity. It is relevant to students whose research involves direct or indirect interaction with peoples lives, including via documentary sources and internet methodologies as well as via interviews and participant observation. The course will emphasise the value of careful and critical reflection on researchers own experiences in their interactions with the lives of others.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have a critical appreciation of approaches to reflexivity in qualitative research in theory and in practice. That should be able to understand and have strategies for working with the power dynamics of research encounters and emotional dimensions of qualitative research. They should also have an appreciation of key moments in qualitative research encounters including introductions, transitions and crises, and goodbyes

Assessment Information

One essay of approximately 4,000 words on a topic agreed with course convenors.
