Helping Troubled Children and Young People (P01463)

This course explores in both a theoretical and experiential way, the helping skills needed in working with children and young people of school age in distress or in difficulty. Course members will explore a range of methods of support, including counselling skills and groupwork.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course participants will have:
LO1 explored a range of methods of working with troubled children and young people;
LO2 contextualised these within an understanding of the concept of mental health, theories accounting for mental health problems and disturbing behaviour and models of intervention;
LO3 developed a framework of understanding, which emphasises the individual worth of children and young people however disturbing their behaviour;
LO4 explored and practised counselling and other helping skills in a variety of situations;
LO5 evaluated and reflected on group approaches related to their own professional context;
LO6 discussed relevant research findings and research methods used.

Assessment Information

The assignment will detail the planning, implementation and evaluation of an appropriate helping technique in the course member's own professional context. The account will be underpinned by reference to relevant research and literature and will conclude with a reflective analysis of the course member's own interpersonal skills and professional practice (5000 words).
