Learning and Teaching (Additional Support for Learning) (P01481)

This module will address current theory and practices in assessment, teaching and learning and relates them to the diversity of pupils/students who have additional learning and/or support needs. The context is one of entitlement to appropriate education that 'is directed to the development of the personality, talents and mental and physical abilities [of learners] to their fullest potential'. The range of approaches explored, with relevant research and theory, will help teachers/lecturers to meet the educational needs of whole classes, groupings within classes and individuals. It will also give them a grasp of quality evaluation issues in their own work.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the principles underlying learning in young people and children and the implications for assessment and teaching practice
2. Be knowledgeable about current thinking on assessment and be able to select an appropriate range of procedures, including observation strategies, as part of the process of enhancing learning and teaching;
3. Be able to balance the significance in learning and in barriers to learning, of context-related factors (such as school/class ethos, aspects of the curriculum and teacher practices and attitudes) with learner-related factors (such as cognitive and physical development and personal history);
4. Be able to interpret, record and report evidence relating to learners and their contexts appropriately and with ethical awareness;
5. Plan educational programmes with pupils, and relevant others, that are appropriate to and effective for the individual and that involve pupils actively in their own learning
6. Have developed a critical approach to their own practice, based on knowledge of relevant theory and research.

Assessment Information

Course members will write a reflective and critical evaluation (approx 5000 words) of their work with a group of pupils/students or, exceptionally, with one pupil/student, involving if and when appropriate, the support of colleagues, peer pupils and parents/carers.
