Promoting Health: Evidence, Policy and Practice (P01500)

1. To introduce students to concepts underlying health promotion/health education theory and practice.

2. To identify the scope and purpose of health promotion, and the approaches of health education, disease prevention and health protection.

3. To enable students to acquire the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion activities and research.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Describe, discuss and show an understanding of:
a) Health, its determinants and the ways in which these can be assessed.
b) Historical development of health promotion/health education and the factors, principles, perspectives and theories which contribute to and have shaped current practice.
c) Settings for the application of health promotion.
d) Range of the approaches and methods in health promotion/health education.
2. Display an ability to:
a) Select and apply appropriate methods and approaches to attain health promotion goals.
b) Communicate effectively health promotion ideas and information to individuals and groups.
3. Show a critical appreciation of:
a) The need to enable individuals and communities to take control of and improve their health.
b) Inequalities in health and their implications.

Assessment Information

One course paper of 4,000 - 5,000 words
