Advanced Study in Counselling and Psychotherapy (P01501)

This course provides students with opportunities to study a range of debates in the literature concerned with counselling and psychotherapy. These include debates about: approaches to clinical practice with particular population groups and/or specific conditions (e.g. children and young people, trauma); theoretical and philosophical influences (e.g. neuroscience, narrative approaches); clinical settings (e.g. primary care, voluntary sector); and contextual issues (e.g. professionalisation, the rise of therapy cultures). The topics covered in any one delivery will be finalised in negotiation with course participants.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to;
- identify and conceptualise debates influencing practice, provision and training in counselling and psychotherapy
- critically assess and synthesise the relevance of research and scholarship on specific for the practice and provision of counselling and psychotherapy
- critically assess different disciplinary perspectives on debates about counselling and psychotherapy
- formulate research questions on specific topics of debate in counselling and psychotherapy

One 4000 - 5000 word essay on a topic agreed with the course organiser
