Information literacies for online learning (P01545)

This course is aimed at teachers, trainers and other practitioners within post-compulsory education who wish to meet the challenges of the ever-growing electronic information world and to develop their own understanding of information literacy. The course will seek to develop the information literacies of the participants, and assist them to foster such literacies in the students, learners and clients in their own field.

On completion of the course, participants will have gained a broad overview of how information literacy has become a key issue in education and training, what digital resources can offer in terms of the delivery and support of learning programmes, and how teaching, learning and research is affected by their engagement with these resources.

? Pre-requisites : An introduction to digital environments for learning (P01038)

? Costs : Students will be required to have regular access to a networked computer, and will be responsible for providing their own computing equipment and consumables. Broadband is recommended.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

critically evaluate and use a range of current online information resources

engage with the possibilities and limitations of information technologies

examine and develop both their own information-seeking practices and those of their students, clients or co-workers

demonstrate a critical understanding of the constraints of human information processing and cognitive and learning styles on the use of online information resources

support students, learners and clients in the context of the information explosion and the crisis in scholarly communication

Assessment Information

Assessment will have two parts:

1) Courswork design (50%)
Participants will design a piece of coursework in any subject area, aimed at a group of students/co-workers. The coursework must require students to use and develop their information skills in the context of the subject of study. This assignment should be of 2,000 words and submitted at the end of week 6.

2) Essay (50%)
This assignment should be submitted at the end of the course. The format of the essay is optional - it can be a word-processed document, a web essay or a video essay (which should be submitted online or on DVD and with a transcript). The finished assignment should be equivalent to 2,500 words.
