Personality, Coping and Health Research (P01570)

To provide an understanding of research on the relationships between individual differences in personality and coping, and health-related outcomes. We explore the different types of contribution that individual differences in these factors may make to understanding and/or altering health in groups of individuals. Methodological issues are considered, the major approaches to the study of individual differences in health are examined, and practical applications are discussed. The specific topics which will be covered include: the methodology of individual differences and health research; epidemiology of health; patterns of health; psychoneuroimmunology; health behaviours and health outcomes; personality and health; personality, stress and coping; adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies; individual differences in coping with illness; the influence of individual differences in intelligence on coping; and the various applications of personality, coping and health research.

Weeks 1-5 this course will take place on Tuesday's 11am to 1pm. Weeks 7-11 this course will take place on Thursday's 11am to 1pm.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

1.Demonstrate an advanced understanding of current issues in individual differences and health research.

2.Critically evaluate the extent to which the different approaches can contribute to our understanding of individual differences and health-related behaviours or illness.

3.Understand and apply the research methods of psychology and epidemiology to individual differences and health research.

4.Discuss applications of individual differences and health research in medicine, health education, and promotion.
