Acronym : LAW-P-P01630 The course is designed to provide a detailed and critical understanding of the development of the European Union into an area of 'Freedom, Security and Justice' and its constitutional implications for the European Union itself, for the Member States and for European citizens, residents and others. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- critically analyse the idea of the European Union as an 'area of freedom, justice and security', both as a general notion and in respect of its component parts; - understand and assess EU policy in relation to fundamental rights and citizenship, the free movement of persons, immigration, asylum and treatment of refugees, and internal and external security, including police and criminal justice cooperation; - draw links between EU policy and relevant conceptual ideas and frameworks such as 'securitisation' and 'security'; the idea of 'Europe'; social inclusion and exclusion; the rule of law, justice and human rights; citizenship.
