Fictions of Other Britains: Race, Diaspora, Culture (P01648)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LLC-P-U02767 This course is designed to introduce students to a range of post-War and contemporary fiction by writers from Black African, Caribbean and South Asian descent - whether as migrants or the descendents of settlers, Other Britons who offer portraits of Other Britains. The course traces the effort to find accommodation - in Britain by the peoples of its former colonies and examines the subversive and challenging impact of their redrawing of Britishness, returning to Britain its own repressed history. Students will gain an appreciation of postcolonial theory, and develop an expertise in utilising theories of migration, diaspora and hybridity. A range of problematics will be analysed that covers race, ethnicity, gender, class, topography, language. Students will not only examine the positive experience of diasporic writing, the re-appropriation of English as a language, the reclamation of home and so on, but also, of necessity, confront issues of racism, intolerance, social exclusion. Students will be enabled to trace the construction of more emancipatory identities and a redefinition of Britishness through the fiction examined by the course.
