Foundations of Health Policy and Health Care System (P01747)

1. To introduce and explore with course participants the concepts that underlie public and personal health services and how governments and society engage with such concepts at a policy and political level.
2. To critique the key interfaces between health policy and its subsequent planning and delivery.
3. To discuss how the diverse arena of health policy and health systems can help to address and resolve health problems at a personal and public level.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, participants should:
1. Be able to analyse the degree to which key theoretical perspectives and concepts contribute to an evaluation of different health care systems in the context of different national economic, historical, cultural and developmental situations.
2. Be aware of the different bases for appraising and evaluating varied models of health care system's planning and delivery in the context of specific countries and national contexts.
3. Have identified those concepts that can be practicably transferred into the workplace and contribute towards health related problem solving.

Assessment Information

There are no examinations; the course will be assessed by one piece of coursework (100%) in the form of a critical essay that is designed to assess the students’ understanding and application of theoretical concepts to contemporary issues in health care management. In particular it seeks to asses their analytical capabilities.
