Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, course participants should:
a) Be able to explain and discuss contemporary British health policy using relevant theory from politics, economics, sociology and organisational behaviour.
b) Have the ability to critically analyse existing and new health policy initiatives using the aforementioned theoretical frameworks. This form of Policy Analysis and Appraisal will also involve the ability to use specific models, techniques and evaluative mechanisms.
c) Be aware of the potential and confident in the use of such techniques and their transferability to the workplace. Having familiarised themselves with the theoretical background to health policy and its subsequent analysis, it is expected that the students will be able to appraise and extrapolate the managerial and professional consequences of policy initiatives and developments.
d) Have developed a range of specific skills, in particular students should be able to design a piece of policy analysis and/or policy evaluation in the health care field. They will also be able to link their subject specific knowledge to other subject areas which they have studied on their masters course, in particular, strategic management, marketing and organisational behaviour.
It is also expected that students will have developed a deeper understanding of the key issues which are relevant in the selection of a research problem and the design of a research project in the health care field, in anticipation of their dissertations.
e) Have the ability and confidence to question how, and the consequences of, the implementation of health policy initiatives in their workplace. Such skills would be expected to furnish the student with the ability to apply for promotion, change their job or enhance their professional responsibility and range.

Assessment Information

Students will be asked to produce either a practice or research based report on a particular health problem/policy/management issue of their choice. The report will need to be supported by either primary or secondary data. 100%
