Organisational Studies (P01756)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : MSE-P-OS

Organisations are collections of individuals each allocated a set of tasks, the effective fulfilment of which should facilitate the attainment of organisational goals. Designing those tasks and motivating organisational members to perform them well is a fundamental task of all managers. Organisations are also structural configurations, and decisions on the location of jobs and people within the organisation's structures are commonly linked with successful organisational performance. Lastly, organisations within broader institutional contexts which they are both shaped by, and may attempt to shape. The management of people, organisational processes and the organisation-environment interface are clearly strategic issues in both the private and public sector.

Organisational Studies incorporates research derived from various academic disciplines - sociology, psychology, political science, economics and anthropology - and is of particular relevance to managers who are required to direct and co-ordinate the activities of employees while relating to, and negotiating with, peers and seniors. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of key aspects of contemporary management practice in the workplace, particularly in relation to contemporary developments in human resource management.
