Early Gaelic and its Texts (P01893)

The course is taught in two complementary strands, introducing students to the pronunciation, grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and training them to read edited Early Irish texts. After an introduction to the pronunciation of Early Irish and the development of reading skills, the course proceeds to study Early Irish texts with a greater emphasis on content and context.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Approval of the instructor, which may require prior training in a Celtic language, or in another language other than English.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students with a thorough grouding in the pronunciation, grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and the capacity to read edited Early Irish texts, as well as an introduction to the palaeographic, orthographic and textual background of these texts.

Assessment Information

A series of written grammar and translation exercises (25% of the final course mark) and a final examination (75%) consisting of two papers.
