Evaluation and Research (P01918)

This course will provide an introduction to systems and methods of applied research and evaluation. Quantitative and qualitative research methods will be introduced on the basis of applied examples of audit and evaluation of mental health services as well as individual treatment evaluations.

The course will introduce the use and application of statistical software packages. The course will further teach the appraisal of resarch evidence and the design and implementation of audit and evaluation projects. Particular emphasis will be placed on user participation and resaerch ethics.

? Additional Class Information : Taught within set blocks amounting to 10 days of teaching of approximately 6.5 hours per day.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be competent:
1) In accessing literature both in relation to clinical work and for service design and delivery.
2) in identifying and critically appraising research evidence relevant to practice.
3) In writing a literature review.
4) In designing (user satisfaction) questionnaires in the assessment of quality.
5) To record data using appropriate package (eg. Excel)
6) In the use of a computer to assist with data analysis using an appropriate package eg. SPSS) to evaluate clinical interventions and/or audit service.
7) In audit and evaluation within the Child Psychology Service or for a designated service.
8) In delivering a report of research or audit both by presentation and in writing.

Systematic literature review of 5,000 words
