The Module will introduce students to the academic discipline of ethnomusicology and explore Highland and other Scottish music, generic and individual idioms and performance practices, both historical and contemporary, making particular use of recorded examples from the archival collection.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The Module aims to introduce students to the vitality of Highland traditional musical culture in its regional, national and international context, an understanding of ethnomusicology, and first-hand acquaintance with major collections and other resources, including the School of Scottish Studies Sound Archive.
