Older Adults: Clinical Psychology as applied to Nursing (P02077)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : HEA-P-OA:CPAN

We live in an ageist society and as such all of us who work in the NHS may have internalised societal views of older people that equates ageing with loss, deficits and decrepitude. Often old age is characterised as negative and yet recent gerontological research findings would suggest that growth and change continue throughout life and many people find later years to have surprising rewards. The danger is that the psychological needs of older people as they engage with nurses and in nursing environments may be under-recognised and misunderstood. This can lead to a general lack of treatment. This proposed course addresses this potential risk as it is consistent with the ethos of the need to maintain an holistic approach to nursing care for older people.
