To provide students with a critical awareness of the alternative techniques available for ensuring that operations are continuously aligned with the needs of customers and an ability to discuss the contextual and contingent factors influencing their implementation and use.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course students should:a) be able to describe the use of Baldrige Award criteria, Business Excellence Model, ISO9000, ISO14000 and Investors in People b) be able to use models of quality costs, customer service and organisational change as a foundation for analyzing the management of quality in organizations c)understand the principles of statistical process control, failure modes effect analysis, process quality costing, Taguchi methods and problem analysis techniquesd) Understand how each of the techniques and models can be used to provide a framework for the management of quality e)Be able to relate the basis of each model to statistical, business strategy and organization theory as appropriate f)Be able to discuss critically the practical use of the techniques covered, taking into account organizational context g)Be able to explain the relationship between the management of quality and other management disciplines in the general context of the strategic goals and objectives of the organisation.

Assessment Information

By examination and a project, each making up 50% of the final mark. The project will comprise the analysis of quality management in an organisation of the student?s choice
