Between counselling and research 2: Qualitative Research Design and Methods (P02131)

This course examines key issues in the design and methods of qualitative research projects undertaken in counselling studies. The topics covered will vary from year to year to accommodate the particular interests of students but will usually include at least some of the following: conceptualising qualitative research; conducting and analysing research interviews, using and analysing personal narratives, conducting and analysing participatory and observational methods, using and and analysing documentary sources.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to
- identify and conceptualise the processes involved in designing and undertaking research in counselling studies
- critically assess the relevance of different methods of data collection and data analysis to specific research topics in counselling studies
- synthesise discussions about research methods relevant to specific research topics in counselling studies
- critically assess methods of conducting and analysing research interviews
- critically assess the use of personal narratives in counselling research
- appreciate the relevance of documentary sources for research in counselling studies

Assessment Information

One 4,000 to 5,000 word essay on a topic agreed with the course organiser.
