Re-thinking South Asian-Islam (P02236)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : HCA-P-RSAI This course will explore the intellectual history of South Asian Muslim though between 1700 and the present. Each session will be dedicated to the close reading of a key text in English translation - (associated with one of the figure-heads of various forms of religious reform, such as Shah Wali Ullah Dehlawi, Shah Ismacil, Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan, the Deobandi movement, Sir Muhammad Iqbal, Inayatullah Khan Mashriqi, Abul Acla Maududi, G.A. Parwez) which will be subjected to a number of different textual strategies; as well as being placed into its historical context with the help of limited secondary reading. There will be an explicit link between primary sources and the core theoretical literature in the wider field of intellectual history. Students are invited to shuttle back and forth between the methodology of intellectual history and a subject matter that in itself represents something like a tradition of intellectual history; Rethinking Islam was and is after all about the question of how historical texts of the Islamic tradition are to be interpreted within time and space. ? (a) Knowledge and understanding:
Students are expected to achieve several aims, which will be assessed primarily by essays, seminars and a dissertation, such as: Knowledge of the chief methods of practising intellectual history and an appreciation of the ineluctable interdependence of text and context, and of the importance of ideas in the past and the present Detailed knowledge of key thinkers and key texts of Islamic reformist thought in South Asia from the early modern period to the present. Wider Familiarity with basic religious, political and social concepts of the Islamic tradition and their relationship to local cultural contexts. (b) Intellectual skills: A wide variety of intellectual skills are promoted through seminars, discussions and advanced study, encouraging the development of the following: Ability to develop tight and coherent arguments both orally and in writing Capacity to read texts critically and sensitively, evaluating their arguments as well as situating them in their practical and intellectual contexts Appreciation of a variety of approaches to intellectual history Ability to cross disciplinary boundaries, for example, between philosophy, science and history Assessment Information
