Pragmatics (MSc) (P02372)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : PPL-P-PRGM-LS The course covers a set of phenomena in linguistics which have attracted explanations in pragmatic theory. Through an exploration of constructions such as intensifiers, quotatives, and diminutives, students are encouraged to evaluate and criticise different frameworks within pragmatics, e.g. politeness theory, relevance theory. We will also consider what historical accounts of the development of these constructions can contribute to our understanding of them. Entry Requirements? On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and discuss important concepts in pragmatics - Analyse spoken data for both structure and function - Evaluate different kinds of explanation in the field of pragmatics Assessment Information
