Making Integration Work 1: Planning a Project (P02408)

This course is part of a Programme which aims to help managers of health, social care and voluntary organisations identify and use different sources of information to more rigorously plan, evaluate and learn from service development projects which span different sectors and services. The Programme is divided into three interlinked courses through which students progressively build knowledge and skills needed in integrated service development. This is the first course and offers training in use of information for project planning

? Pre-requisites : Undergraduate Honours or equivalent

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Students bring with them a specific project selected in discussion with their organisation and learn through the development of this project.

Two one-day workshops. (15 hours)
Independent tutor input (2 hours)
Guided reading (20 hours)
Self directed work-based learning (up to 140 hours)
Writing of project plan (20 hours)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
Knowledge of current research evidence about - integration - of care
Critical understanding of current theory, concepts and principles of - knowledge management - use of information in organisational development

Applying Knowledge and Understanding:
Application of principles of knowledge management to identify how local conditions of service integration impact on specific service developments
Application of a range of research and information management techniques to plan a project in integrated service development.

Cognitive skills:
Critical appraisal of research evidence
Appraisal of different kinds of knowledge:
- Tacit knowledge
- Codified routine service information
- Information collected through different methods
Analysis and interpretation of different types of information to guide practice in specific circumstances.

Practical and teamworking skills:
Project management skills
- Project risk management
- Resource management
- Review and evaluation in project management

Project leadership which draws on a critical reflection on own and others' roles and responsibilities



Assessment Information

The component will be assessed by a written project plan between 3000 and 4000 words. Assessment will be by
- Knowledge and understanding of theory and concepts of knowledge management and their practical application
- Appropriate use of information
- Doability
