Cross-cultural communication (P02420)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : PPL-P-CCC

This course examines the linguistic and paralinguistic factors affecting communication from one culture to another by analysing cross-cultural communication from the perspective of interactional sociolinguistics. Through readings, lectures and discussions, students will examine the communicative practices of different cultural groups and will analyse examples of cross-cultural (mis-) communication in a variety of contexts, ranging from casual interpersonal conversation to interactions in specific institutional settings. Although cross-cultural communication will be mainly studied from the perspective of interactional sociolinguistics, two class sessions will be devoted to cross-cultural pragmatics and contrastive (written) rhetoric.
