Corporate Strategy (IBEM) (P02642)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MSE-P-CPIBEM Participants will gain an overall understanding of the needs, contexts and processes of strategic management in businesses working in an international context, and some useful approaches to analyzing them. These range from commonly applied ‘prescriptive’ approaches, to lessons drawn from the observation and analysis of real firms and managers (i.e. management research). This course is tailored to the background and interests of those undertaking the MSc programme in International Business and Emerging Markets with some specifically international dimensions of strategy which are further developed in the optional course Global Strategy and Management. The aim of the Corporate Strategy course is to help students to examine the corporate strategic possibilities of an enterprise, and in doing so, to encourage them to integrate what they have learnt from other courses and elective choices. • Understanding the complexity of strategic management in international firms. • Understanding of the traditional approaches of strategic analysis. • Knowledge of the tools of strategy analysis and their limitations. • Knowledge of strategy alternatives for international firms. • Understanding the different perspectives for managing internationally • Understanding the current issues being faced by international managers in developing their international businesses Assessment Information
A. Coursework 1 (10%): Individual 200 word summary of key readings submitted before Session 7.
B. Coursework 2 (20%): Teams reading presentations in Session 8 (based on the contributors’ key readings summaries). C. Coursework 3 (20%): Teams present strategy analyses of the ESC Electronica case in session 10. D. Role-play exam (50%): Individuals will answer two questions set by the CEO of a case company, the case having been given to the students some weeks before. Exam times
