An Introduction to the Thought of Karl Marx (PO0031)

The course explores the development of Marx's thought, considering a selection of his early and later writing. Topics covered include alienation, the relation of 'theory' to 'practice', state & civil society, 'historical materialism', commodity fetishism and the concept of surplus-value.

Throughout the course an attempt is made to clarify the relation between Marx and the liberal tradition. Controversies regarding Marx's theorising are presented in an open ended way.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Visiting students must have prior study in Politics. As a general guide we usually require students to have completed three Politics courses at grade B or above. Admission to honours courses is limited and there can be strong competition for places.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The aim of the course is to introduce a selection of Marx's writings, Marx's ideas remaining fundamental to a number of areas in social and political thought. In introducing Marx's writing, the course aims to enhance students' conceptual skills; and it aims to tackle questions raised in reading (without unde reliance on secondary works) a series of diverse and complex texts.
