Secondment Scheme (PO0075)

? Credit Points : 40  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : SPS-3-POSS

The placement scheme can be taken as an alternative to a dissertation in the 4th year. The scheme offers students the opportunity to undertake in-depth research in a practical political or policy environment, for example, working for an MSP, a political party, local government, or a voluntary organisation. The placement project is negotiated with the host organisation before the placement starts, and must promise valuable output for the participating organisation.

In the first semester, students are required to participate in a series of group-based workshops, designed to reinforce research skills, refine interview techniques and presentation skills, and develop skills in report-writing. Students will also be expected to have individual meetings with the Placement Convenor, and make them available for attending interview(s) with prospective host organisations. The placement itself is undertaken in the Spring, for 2 days per week, over a period of 12 weeks. The hours and times are negotiated with the organisation, in consultation with the placement convenor. Students will receive supervision from an individual within the host organisation, and will receive academic supervision from the Placement Convenor.

Assessment is on the basis of a written report. The report is split into two parts:

(i) the project completed on behalf of the host organisation, and
(ii) an academic evaluation of the project undertaken.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The Student Placement Scheme aims to develop students' analytical and practical research skills, and to enhance transferable skills by providing valuable work experience. Students undertake a substantial research project in a professional environment, using appropriate methodologies in carrying out the research. The research is presented in a report, and accompanied by an academic evaluation which should analyse the wider policy and academic significance the research.
