An introduction to feminist theories of the state, making the links between theoretical positions, political action and policy; examining the relationship between feminist social movements and contemporary advanced industrial states.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To facilitate an understanding of the subject and critical analysis of both the feminist literature and the wider state and public policy literatures, and to complement students' other work on the politics of the public sector and the nature and functioning of the contemporary state, developing their understanding through case study and cross-national comparison.

Assessment Information

Two pieces of written work. The first shorter piece (1200 words) will test understanding of conceptual issues and will count for 30% of the total mark awarded for the course. The second longer piece (3500 words) will consist of a research case study (single or comparative) and will count for 70% of the total mark awarded for the course.
