This course combines a detailed study of certain classic writings in moral philosophy by such thinkers as Aristotle, Hume, Kant and Mill, together with an examination of some central topics in social and political philosophy, such as social contract theory, liberty, justice, punishment and responsibility.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

(i) To provide an introduction to central problems and classic texts in moral, political, and social philosophy. (ii) Through the non-historical parts of this course, to encourage the students to think philosophically, imaginatively and critically (and sometimes abstractly) about ethical, socialand political issues of current importance. (iii) To provide students who will take Honours Philosophy courses with a solid understanding of central topics and ideas, thereby providing a firm basis for the development of their philosophical knowledge and understanding. (iv) To enable the student to express philosophical ideas and arguments both orally.

Assessment Information

3 essays; 2 exams (Dec and May). Coursework: each essay and Dec exam counts for 25%; Final assessment: 50% May exam; 50% coursework; must obtain at least 34% in May exam.
