This course is designed to build on the introduction to Scottish ethnology given in the first year, with an emphasis on skills, resources and issues for ethnologists. It includes components on archive and fieldwork methodology, music, urban and religious ethnology and community case studies.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should have

• gained practical experience of using visual and sound archives and relevant databases, maps and place names as sources of ethnological evidence
• increased knowledge of cultural expression in religious activity, instrumental and vocal music, dance, and among Scottish Travellers and fairground families
• learned basic methods of transcribing recorded texts, and describing music and dance performance
• engaged with a range of relevant ethnological texts and other data and the issues which these pose
• undertaken original research based in field and archival work
• gained confidence in presenting the results of personal study and research in oral and written form
