Scotland and Ireland, 1800-1922 (SH0007)

This course aims to examine the History of Scotland and Ireland in the period from 1800 to 1939 in both a comparative and an interactive sense. The main themes of the course will be: the comparative social and economic development of Scotland and Ireland; emigration and the growth of an Irish community in Scotland; the growth of nationalism and the relationship between Scotland, Ireland and "Britain"; It is not intended that the course should provide a comprehensive survey of Scottish and Irish history in the nineteenth century.

? Pre-requisites : A pass in any first level historical course and any second level historical course or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

It is the objective that at the completion of the course students should have a good understanding of three areas:

Comparative Scottish and Irish Historiography.
The value of comparing Scotland's historical experience to that of other nations.
The place of Scotland and Ireland in a wider European context.

Assessment Information

One two-hour exam paper (two thirds)
One 3000 word essay (one third)
