Ibsen, Brandes and Strindberg (SS0044)

The course will begin with a study of the early Ibsen, tracing, inter alia, his connections with and development away from National Romanticism. It moves on to the critic Georg Brandes and assesses the tenets of his call for a modern turn in literature. Examples of Ibsen's and Strindberg's Realist and Naturalist drama will then be discussed in the light of Brandesian and other critical ideas.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Danish 2 or Norwegian 2 or Swedish 2 at the first attempt.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the course will develop an ability to read individual texts in the light of historical, theoretical and linguistic contexts.

One 3000 word essay + 3 hour degree examination.
