Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
a) whether models of population regulation derived from the study of non-human populations may be applied validly to our own experience;
b) how the Theory of the Demographic Transition in Europe has developed in recent years and whether trustworthy generalizations about this phenomenon may still be stated; c) what current patterns of fertility in developed societies, particularly Great Britain, are and how they may be explained in sociological terms; d) how world population is growing and whether this growth constitutes a threat to human welfare; e)how the phenomenon of contraceptive risk-taking among teenagers may be explained; f) how reproductive motivation in the less developed world may be explained and why family planning programmes have been so notoriously ineffective; g) whether China, as a case study, will achieve its current demographic objectives.
