Contemporary Issues in Nationalism Studies I (SY0078)

This course provides an intensive introduction to major, influential theories of nationalism, drawing from a range of academic disciplines. It surveys definitions of nations and nationalisms, and competing approaches to how to study them. Of central concern is the long-standing debate between modernist and primordialist conceptions of nationalism. More generally the course is concerned with how power and culture are conceptualised within various theories of nationalism. The course combines a series of lectures on key topics, with student-led presentations in tutorials

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course seeks to enable students to:
- Compare contending definitions and theoretical explanations of
nationalism, both critically and analytically.
- Identify and evaluate key debates around the nature and historical formation of nations and nationalism.
- Demonstrate a good comprehension of the theoretical arguments of several major figures in the field of nationalism studies.
