Long Essay (U00052)

Students select a topic, often arising from another honours course, or from a list of approved titles and work, with the supervision of a member of staff, to produce an essay of 6000 words.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : This course is available only to students studying for an honours degree in History single or combined honours or the third year of the BA (Humanities and Social Sciences).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

It is envisaged that the long essay will be a detailed study of a topic working mainly from secondary sources, although in some cases students will be directed towards some basic primary sources. The module is intended to encourage students to identify research topics; to encourage the skill of constructing a bibliography of secondary works on the chosen topic; to develop independent research skills; to ensure that students have the capacity to work independently towards a set deadline and word limit; to test the ability of students to review a large body of literature and produce coherent analytical text.

6,000 word essay.
