Asia and Africa 2 (U00075)

This course aims to introduce the cultures and societies of Asia and Africa, and to chart the changes and transformations such societies underwent as a result of their interaction and involvement with the imperial world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course focuses in particular on East Asia, South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Islamic World.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain a clear and concise understanding of the key developments and long term social and cultural changes that have taken place in Asia and Africa during modern times. They will also be acquainted with the most important historiographical issues and debates that concern the interaction of Asia and Africa with western imperialism.

Assessment Information

2 essays (not more than 2,000 words). Class work 50%; degree exam 50%. No exemptions. One three hour examination paper.
