Italy and the Mediterranean from Constantine to the Crusades (U00081)

A study of the economic, political, cultural and religious history of Italy from the fourth to the twelfth century in the context of developments in the wider Mediterranean world. Within a broadly chronological approach, certain thematic issues are addressed, such as problems of 'decline' and 'transformation', and the nature of regional and local identities. Major historiographical controversies are discussed and a range of primary sources are examined in translation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The students will gain an understanding of the political, economic, cultural religious history of Italy, a key area in early medieval history, and thus a wider knowledge of medieval society and culture. Students will be able to appraise differing views within historiographical controversies, able to exercise critical judgement in relation to both secondary and primary source material, convey conculsions orally and in writing, and carry out assigned tasks in a group context.
