Politics of the Middle East (U00148)

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the politics of the Middle East. This will include analysis of the growth and nature of the state in the Middle East; the prevalence of authoritarianism, neopatrimonialism and processes towards democratisation: the salience of Arab nationalism and Islamism: the roots of some of the conflicts in the region, such as the Arab-Israeli conflict; and the role of external powers and their influence on the politics of the region.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course will aim to have the following intended learning outcomes:
- a basic understanding of the politics of the Middle East;
- an analytical awareness of the differing forms of state and state power in the region: an understanding of the some of the major conflicts of the region and the role of external powers;
- enhancement of presentation skills though oral presentations;
- formative (coursework) and summative (examination) assessment of student's knowledge.
