Welfare, Justice and the State (U00192)

This is the core theory course for Social Policy Honours.
The course aims to introduce students to some of the more important perspectives on welfare and the welfare state. There are five sections, the first three examining normative principles and the final two on the application of these principles. Section 1 is concerned with freedom and coercion as two sides to the state; section 2 principles of distribution (including needs, poverty and inequality); and section 3 citizenship and social justice. Section 4 looks at applications within welfare states (in relation to punishment, social security and demographic change). Section 5 considers these principles beyond the nation state (in relation to migration, the environment and international development). The aim of the whole course is to give students a good grasp of the principles of welfare and justice and the ways in which they structure the activities of the welfare state. The course includes five tutorials with a reading pack.
