Advanced Topics in International Business (U00260)

This course is being proposed as an advanced course in international business restricted to 4th year honours students. The course is designed to build upon the basic knowledge and fundamental concepts that students will have gained in the prerequisite course Theoretical Foundations of International Business. Theoretical Foundations of International Business is a reading course that presents the basic knowledge and analytical techniques of international business. The proposed course therefore draws from this theoretical background and allows students to invesigate complex international (and interdisciplinary) issues in more depth and through group work. It will allow students to examine current issues in international business as they are affecting and being affected by the international system in which they operate. The course will consist of lectures, presentations and discussions that develop the complexities of current conflicts between, for example, multinationals and the state. Historically important and current cases taken for example to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that illustrate globalisation conflicts (e.g. between firms and states, states and states or firms and firms) will be used as analytical tools. The selection of the cases will vary from year to year and will be determined to some extent by current events. Case preparation, presentation and discussion will be done via group work, an optimal number being four students per group. Three groups will be assigned to each topic each week, but only one will be selected to present in class. The selection will be totally at random; the three groups will draw sticks. The other two groups not selected will be responsible for stimulating a lively discussion of the issues presented. Each of the groups responsible for a session will hand in a short paper.
