This half-course Senior Honours option comprises the first term of the full-course option Econometrics. The half-course begins with a preliminary review of statistics and basic matrix algebra. Econometrics topics covered include: classical OLS estimation and inference; maximum likelihood estimation and inference; disturbance problems and generalized least squares (heteroskedasticity; autocorrelation; semmingly unrelated regression; diagnostic tests); Instrumental variables (IV) and GMM estimation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- A deeper understanding of the possibilities and limitations of standard econometric methods and models than is provided in the Introductory Econometrics half-course;
- provide a sound basis for further more advanced study of econometrics on graduate programmes;
- enable students to use econometric methods intelligently with an understanding of their appropriateness and limitations.

Assessment Information

Take home problem sets (20% of final mark); Two hour degree exam in May/June diet (80% of final mark) [The exam will comprise the first section of the degree exam for the full-course Econometrics, and will need to be sat simultaneously].
