Politics and Management of Mental Illness (U00279)

Students will examine the sociological, legal and political issues in psychiatric nursing care. This includes mental health policy, mental illness and the criminal justice system. Concepts such as age, racism, gender and social construction of mental illness will be addressed. This course is suitable for outside students.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To promote deeper understandingof the impact of policy on the organisation and provision of mental health care
To facilitate the student's understandingof the wider social and political context in which health care is provided.

Assessment Information

Two course papers of 2,500-3,000 words OR one long course paper of 4000 - 4500 words.
